panoramica de Jerez de los Caballeros

The Birthplace of the Iberian pig.

It is located at 511 m. altitude. It is adjacent to the N-435 between Badajoz (74 km) and Fregenal de la Sierra, to 444 km from Madrid. It is the hometown of Vasco Nunez de Balboa, discoverer of the Pacific sea.

The Phoenicians called it "Ceret" and the Romans "Fama Iulia or Caeriana". In 711, after the battle of Guadalete, came under Muslim rule and was called "Serixa or Xeris". It was retaken in 1230 by King Alfonso IX of Leon, who ceded it to the Knights Templar, who called it "Xere Equitum".

It became the capital and changed its name to Jerez de los Caballeros. In 1312 Clement V ordered the dissolution of the Knights Templar, who refused and after the battle of the Bloody Tower, were beheaded and after thrown the bodies. In 1326 King Henry II donated it to the Order of Santiago.

The microclimate of this region is ideal for the breeding of the Iberian pig "Patanegra" where you can get the prized acorn Iberian hams of Estremadura. In fact, the region of Jerez de los Caballeros has the privilege of being the most productive area of this animal race where they fed freely in the greatest oaks meadows which we have in Extremadura with the acorn, the food main Iberian pig.

A town rich in architectural heritage and many monuments, castles, chapels and churches. Gardens and parks. Where tourists can see a bit of the history of our civilization. Welcome!!
